Thrift Store Diva

from A Limited Release Retrospective

Thrift Store Diva  (thoughts on fabric #1)

Chandler/Rockstroh

The sun gives the moon all of his gold

and she turns it into silver

unfair, unfair cried the broken hearts

she's been short changing us right from the start

untrue, untrue the tide objects

for we only know the moon from the light she reflects

did you ever stop and think...

...that maybe it's just love and death, and laundry...

...and that's all there really is.

As for me, my life is a thrift store full of abandoned clothes

that now wreath and flutter for there are no walls, no roof, there's just the moon looking down.

And let me tell you tonight she is just a thrift store diva

in a silver evening gown.

She's an orb of luscious dust all gussied up with borrowed light.

I recall the days before Orvil and Wilbur when I alone could fly.

so as I stand awhile in the isles of merchandise that have become my life...

a sports jacket...

neck tie...

I come across a huge set of wings that reminds me of the pair that I once had and lost.

they were now on display next to a counter of broken hearts.

And as I fingered the wings dilapidated down a broken heart smarted off and said, "Ya know Chandler, without its high falootin wings even the bird of paradise ain't nothin but a dandified chicken."

to which the wise well worn neck tie opened his eyes and replied, "Yea, I once saw the bird of paradise...

...in a Chick Filet   being lowered into a vat of boiling grease. but it rose like a mixed metaphor from its sugary breading and turned a midwestern Methodist family of five into living Pez dispensers and they were promptly arrested by mall security for being uninventoried merchandise and are now doing hard time in a maximum security prison some where beneath Disney Land."

So needless to say, I purchased that necktie, (wouldn't you?) and the sports jacket, and the set of wings, and a Pez dispenser with the face of a Methodist.  But I shop lifted the heart by placing it in the vest pocket of the sports jacket, for I knew that stolen hearts are better somehow..

And I knew that I'd be needing this apparel for my date with the moon...

...and she is already dressed and waiting.
