Spring is here! But for far too many in this world that is springing to life in this season of rebirth it is not pretty at all. I think we all look on with admiration at the tenacity of the Ukrainian people, but I also think of the Russians. Forced to fight. Forced into silence, or forced into ignorance. That is not to say that our own peope are by any means a well informed or well spoken lot, but dissent does not mean a 15 year jail sentence.
I think about that today, as we have Russian Artists genuinely afraid to to speak out, and in the west, artists of Russian birth being forced to give loyalty oaths.
Sure, for the most part, we have freedom of speech, the freedom to say some of the stupidest stuff ever uttered.
Sometimes doing it for profit, saying some of the stupidest stuff ever uttered that is. I honestly believe that the Tucker Carlsons of the world don’t actually believe the stuff the are saying but they do it because they know that some people, in particular that poorly informed lot I mentioned earlier, want to hear the stupidest stuff in the world, and therefor they can turn a profit from it.
Is that freedom of speech? It is an interesting premise to ponder as as I give to you this month, a cover poem, song really, words and music by by Colum Sands. I became aware of it as sung by Anne Feeney.
