Activists with Guitars
American singer Toshi Reagon made an interesting comment at her mainstage performance at the Folk Festival Saturday night. She said it was time for musicians to stop being afraid to talk politics at their concerts. Clearly, she hasn't met Chris Chandler and Anne Feeney, whom no one would accuse of shying away from political talk. It's their raison d'etre.
The two are said to have been the funniest and most clever act at the recent G-8 protests in Calgary where they sang songs like "The United States of Generica."
Described as a dangerous man by the Washington Post, Chandler is, to some, part troubadour, part snake-oil salesman and part preacher. In fact, he's such a brilliant political preacher that he almost convinced one Courier employee to become a Chandler groupie.
Feeney, dubbed queen of the labour movement, is no slouch herself when it comes to political satire and conviction. She may be best known for her song "Have You Been to Jail for Justice?"
The duo performs July 25 at the WISE Hall. Showtime is 8 p.m. Call 604-733-2215 for more info.
