Asbury Park, NJ
OK First things First. As you know, I have not done a live show in person in over a year and a half, but I have kept my self sane by doing regular live streams, I enjoy it. At present, I do it the first Sunday of every Month and this month it is on the first, so I thought I would send it out a little early. Please join me for my little show “The Mighty Monthly Muse on Sunday August 1 at 9 PM EDST.
Now, I am not being self effacing when I say little. It is little because well, it’s little, as in miniature. Over the pandemic, I erected a tiny stage in which to perform on line. There is simply no way i can do my regular show without a band, so I, as I often try to do with my poetry and story telling, created an alternative universe. Once a month, I present a full set of poems rants and stories
Please join us via zoom for this truly unique and original interactive event.

AUGUST 2021
ASBURY PARK, NJ
In the “before times,”
we sat upon our couches,
TV dinner in hand...
we hit the remote
and the little white dot appeared
and from its static
the television itself calmly commanded:
“Buy a Toyota.”
But today, things have changed.
For today,
we tune in to our TV and hear that very change
from the TV itself -- the tone is now somber -
as it stammers with serious sincerity:
“In these tying times,
Buy a Toyota.”
For the times they are a-trying,
But, my take on “trying” is a little different.
I say, Celebrate these trying times.
Celebrate how we can come together.
Blessed are the meek
for they shall inherit the earth.
However,
I do not wish to inherit the earth,
I am not meek.
but I do want to help create
an Earth that is worth
inheriting.
The illiterate quote the ignorant
in an effort to mask the refusal to wear a mask
as rugged individualism.
and the greater good as
“flock mentality.”
The very same ones
that long for herd immunity
are the very same ones
that deride us as sheep.
and to that, I say,
Be a shepherd.
We need shepherds.
For, (in these tying times), there is no top down leadership.
and we so very much need a shepherd.
Our leadership has told us
literally -
we are on our own.
That is why (in these tying times,)
we must be strong enough to stand alone,
yet wise enough to stand together.
We can not fly unless we first stand.
and when we all stand together
we realize that the lifting power
of many wings
can achieve
twice the distance
of any single bird flying alone.
When the bird in front tires
he flies to the back so that he may rest
in the draft of the others.
It is in deed YOUR attitude, that determines OUR altitude, and our altitude is determined by,
the attitude of those we fly with.
Fly with me?
It is no coincidence
that both sheep and birds
travel as a flock.
Today,
I think of the essential workers...
as the essential members of our flock.
Sheep and bird.
both flying point AND folding into the flock.
Some get plenty of praise...
first responders, cops, nurses, firefighters,
they have good salaries,
they have pensions.
they have a voice... that is being heard
We honor them.
Often.
and loudly,
but what about the others?
(in these tying times)
Let us hear them.
The truck drivers,
the meat packers, the pet food canners.
They are our saviors.
Saved are the sanation workers and online school teachers,
Precious are the
Postal workers.
Divine the delivery drivers,
for they are glorious,
and there could be no glory without them.
Glorious are the garbage workers,
the tik-tok go go girls,
and grocery store stoke book stockers
for (in these tying times),
you are hollowed
and for you I shout Hallelujah!
Beautiful are the the beverage bottlers,
Absolved are the auto mechanics
and
Christened, the computer repair people,
for you are transcendent
Transcendent
are the tasks of the lowest of the low magnified by the looking glass of ten thousand eye balls that see at once.
(in these tying times),
The strength of the whole is defined by the individual...
the strength of the individual is created by the whole.
Holy
Holy are the highway maintenance men.
Holy are the Hoi Polloi
Holy are the vandals for vigilance.
Holy are those that Howl for humanity.
Holy are the riffraff of righteousness,
Holy are the wretched rank-and-file rabble
yearning to be roused.
Hallowed are the handy men...
Bodacious are the Bodega attendants,
Forever, the farmers and Pharmacists.
Luscious are the liquor store lackeys (no pun intended,)
magnificent the marijuana dispensaries
perfect, the protestors,
the afore mentioned vandals for vigilance
they are - after all - essential,
as they brave the Covid, (in these tying times), to face the teargas of oppression
in an effort to burn down the last vestiges of
“the before times.”
so that the meek shall rise
from the ashes of the past,
to inherit
a world
we have all helped make
worthy
of
inheriting.
