    Hey everybody,

It's that time of the month again.  June is here already! The weather is fabulous! What are you doing reading this news letter — go out and enjoy yourself OK finish reading this news letter, and then go out and enjoy it. Don't worry, this is a short one (and a little more personal than usual.)   I find myself unable to go out and enjoy the ewather because I have been working like a dog in a mad effort to get out a new CD!  It is going to be the best one yet!  American Storyteller is going to be my first double CD, enhanced, with two music videos!

My old friend David Roe is putting together the music for it and so far it is breathtaking.  I met David playing the streets of New Orleans He was wearing a cape, top hat and feather boa, banging on an upright piano with a backdrop of confetti cannons erupting amidst the Mardi Gras madness Dr John on Royal Street.

He is going to do this west coast tour with me along with Frankie Hernandez.  Those of you who have been on board for a while will remember him as the virtuoso trumpet player from The Convenience Store Troubadours era -- walking across the bar and setting fire to the Breakfast Serial Killers.  Good god!  And here is the topper:  We are going to be playing main stage at the Oregon Country Fair!  Hallelujah baby!

But, between now and then I will be 24-7 trying to finish the new CD.  I have even started working as a stage hand to try and pay for this thing.  One of these days I'll tell some tales about working as a stage hand inside The Capitol, The Library of Congress, and Yes, The Pentagon.  I stole a bottle of wine from Dick Cheney, does that count?  I did.  Cheap stuff too Cheap ass California Merlot 2001.  I was surprised, but not really.  What did I expect some fancy French Chateau Margaux?  I was a stage hand for lousy cover band when he was the keynote speaker at one of those ten thousand dollar a plate fund raisers.  The band played that insipid Billy Joel song "Movin On" you know — the one with the with the "Heart attack ak ak ak ak" hook.  Anyway, they had cases of  cheap wine.  I took one and gave it to one of the pan handlers outside the fortress.

Of course they had extra plates of  Fillet Mignon but I couldn't manage to escape with any of that — they literally threw the extra into the dumpsters and poured bleach on it, and then crushed it in a deficit sized trash compactor so the homeless couldn't get it.   It let's you know where these guys create their vision of America.  Ten thousand dollar plates of food being thrown into the garbage and then poisoned to keep the riff raff from digging out a meal.  Walls, security guards and bullet proof limos surrounded by abject third world poverty.

These anecdotes seem to slip between trips to the studio and rehearsals with horn and string sections.   I am so into this new record that I have had to skip going to Kerrville this year.  It is the first time I have voluntarily missed it in 16 years.  I will miss it.  I can HONESTLY say, I have spent more nights in a row on the quiet valley ranch that any single place in 16 years!

I miss Kerrville.  I miss my crew.  I miss my camp.  I miss my family.  I miss seeing the kids one year older.  OK, I miss the beer.  I miss the music, I miss the river, I miss you, the person reading this - especially the one I've never met (at least not yet.)  I miss Chapel Hill and Crow's Nest at sunrise.  I miss Vern Crawford reminding me of what Kerr-Holiday it is.  OK, I miss the beer, I miss hugging strangers, I miss hugging old friends - even on day 19.  I miss the octa-johns, OK I miss complaining about the octa-johns.  OK, I miss the beer.

I miss saying hi to all the trees we have planted together, in remembrance of our departed friends. Yes, I will miss planting new ones this year (very much.) I miss the gossip, the rumors, the news of what happened over the dark days between festivals.  I miss the tales that always end with well, it got us to the quiet valley ranch THIS year.

Not me.   Not this year.  But please know I am out there, giving it my all, and making what promises to be my best record to date.

See you on the west coast!

    Chandler
